toothycat.net outage
May. 28th, 2009 10:59 amUnfortunately, the company that currently hosts www.toothycat.net has suffered a major data loss last night.
It is looking increasingly unlikely that they will be able to recover our data in any reasonable time if at all. So I will be configuring a fresh machine and restoring data from my own backup later today, as soon as they are ready for me to do so. I last took a full backup of the server on the 15th of March (I suck), and I realise many people who have webspace with us will have uploaded changes since then. I will send an email to let people know when it is safe to log in and overwrite the old data I will restore with their own backups. Until then toothycat.net will be down and/or glitchy.
I am really sorry about this ;_;
(Email, for those of you who use us for email, is unaffected, as that machine is sitting in our living room and not in a data centre in York).
Update: new VM is up, but they've given us 2Gb disk space instead of the 20Gb we used to have (I assume they typoed... ^^;), which isn't enough to even upload the backup archive never mind decompress it. Waiting for fix.
Update: we have disk space! Have started uploading the tarball. scp says ETA 24 hours >.< I need a faster net connection.
Update: 24 hours was optimistic, transfer is BLOODY SLOW. If it does not improve, tonight I will shove the tarball onto a USB key and drive it over to somewhere that is actually connected to the internet in some better fashion than two cups and a piece of string.
Update: Got data somewhere with, y'know, a net connection. 2 hours, much more like it; so, should be over around 1am. Then I have to untar it (in two passes; had to break the tarball up into little bits due to filesize restrictions in inferior commercial operating systems) and spend an hour or two wrestling the server into submission since it's not a complete image but only /home and /etc. Hopefully be ready end of lunchtime tomorrow.
