LiveJournal expose a Perl-like programming language used to generate your journal's HTML/CSS. Each of the different preset styles is provided by a program written in it; you can get the source for them, and you can write your own.

Oooh. When you are wise in the ways of S2, can you make an S2 style that actually looks like my current S1 style, please? :-)

Could you list the things about the S2 "Classic" style that make you unhappy? It might be easier to come up with fixes for specific things than to start from scratch..

I can. Indeed, I even made an ill-tempered livejournal post on the subject a while back; AIUI, my objections there still stand.

Ok.. have started tweaking. The fonts would be a bit of a pain in the butt to unpick, because the original style uses a number of different settings pulled from several separate stylesheets *and* some explicit per-tag styles within the HTML; the friends-page things are caused by the fact that the same code generates that as the main journal page, so to change the formatting I'd have to duplicate the code and tweak; annoyances 2, 3, 4 and 5 now fixed though :)
