Enjoying art and giving fan art is not a waste of time per se - I've enjoyed every single one. You learn heaps doing it too ;-/ I guess if all your creative endeavours were fan art or fan fics it might be seen as enjoyable but perhaps not as creative as you could possibly be, but that's not quite the same as 'waste of time'.
