"An oral exam, lasting about 3-4 hours, where two experts in your field dissect your thesis in front of your eyes and ask you to justify all the things you did which seemed like a good idea at the time. Actually, mine wasn't that bad - I know it could've been much worse.
Now I have to make minor corrections and send in the completed article to the committee, but effectively this means I passed my PhD."
